Cremation Services And How They Work

Posted on: 5 December 2022

When you lose a loved one it can be very difficult to think about the next steps for them. However, these next steps are very important. If they did not leave a will or any wishes behind, the decision will be up to you on how to proceed. If you are weighing your options, you may be thinking about cremation services.

What Are Cremation Services?

Cremation is a more affordable option after a loved one has passed away. Because of this, it is becoming increasingly more popular. Cremation occurs when the body, after death, is incinerated. This will leave you with the ashes of your loved one.

How Does Cremation Work?

When you choose cremation services for your loved one, this will require your loved one's remains to be sent to the crematory where the cremation will take place. If your loved one's remains have any medical devices or personal items, these will be removed beforehand.

Your loved one will be put in a container that is approved for the cremation process and put into the chamber. The cremation will take place at around 1,400 to 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit. The amount of time this will take can vary widely depending on the size of the remains. Once the process is complete, the crematory will place your loved one's ashes into an urn or container of your choosing.

You may be worried about receiving ashes that are not your loved one, but there is a vigorous identity verification process that takes place multiple times throughout the process. There is an extremely low chance, if any chance at all, that this would occur.

Can You Still Have a Funeral if You Choose Cremation Services?

You can absolutely still have a funeral if you decide to go with cremation services. You have a couple of options for this. You can choose to cremate your loved one before the service and have a service with the urn (or whatever you choose to hold your loved one's ashes) as the focal point. This is the most common way to do the service.

However, you can make arrangements with the funeral home to have the services before your loved one gets cremated if having a viewing is important to you. This will most like cost more for you because they will need a casket, the embalming, etc. as well, but this step in the mourning process can be important.
