Four Ways To Honor Your Loved One's Ashes

Posted on: 10 June 2016

When you have a loved one cremated, there are a variety of ways you can honor them with their ashes. Several different methods of containing and dispersing the remains are available, some of which may be less traditional than others. If you are considering cremation, either for yourself or someone you love, then consider some of the following ways to use the ashes in an honorable way.

Decorative and symbolic urns:

A decorative urn or other symbolic container is a popular traditional choice to store cremated remains. Many urns can be specially designed to represent an interest or activity that the person was known for during life. There are even urns inside stuffed teddy bears. In addition to urns, remains can also be stored in jewelry such as a locket or even pressed into a man-made diamond.

Burying the ashes:

Even though many people choose cremation to save on burial space, you can still bury or entomb cremated ashes. Usually, the space allotted for these burials are smaller than a full-sized burial plot. The good thing about burial in a cemetery is that more people will be able to visit and pay respects. You can also have the ashes buried at home and mark it with a personalized marker of your own.

Scattering:

Another popular choice is to scatter the ashes in an area of special significance. Be aware that there may be rules about where you can scatter ashes and you may need a permit for public areas. If you choose a public place, be mindful of other people's beliefs. Some people have deep-rooted beliefs about being near or touching human remains. Scatter the ashes away from common areas where people walk or sit.

Used as a part of nature:

Some people find it fitting to use part of their loved one's ashes to start a tree or coral reef. The ashes are mixed in the soil to start a sapling or two or are incorporated into cement that is used to create an artificial reef. This may be a fitting memorial for someone who was passionate about nature and wants to give back.

For all of these activities, it is not necessary to use all of the ashes at once. The ashes can be divided among several different options, depending on what the departed would have wanted. If you would like to know of more ways to honor your loved one, contact the crematory. Not only can they assist you with some of these options, but they can also prepare a funeral service so that everyone can pay their respects.
