4 Rock Songs To Avoid Adding To Your Funeral Music Playlist

Posted on: 25 April 2016

If you have ever walked away from a funeral service shaking your head because of the poor song choices, you know that choosing the funeral playlist should be taken seriously. In the process of making your own funeral arrangements, you will be given the opportunity to create a playlist that you want to be played both at the visitation and service. Even though you may be tempted to sift through your CD collection and pull off all your favorites, keep in mind that those you leave behind will be left to endure the music at your service. Here are a few rock songs that you may want to skip.

1. Don't Fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult - No one at the funeral home will want to hear about not fearing the reaper during your service when they will likely be grieving your passing. You may have a major obsession with this incredibly talented vintage rock band, but instead of this song in particular, find something that doesn't mention the reaper as part of the main chorus line like Stairway to the Stars.

2. Another One Bites the Dust - Queen - This hit song from the mega band Queen is bound to be at the top of your list of rock-n-roll favorites. After all, the song is so popular that it has been used in movie soundtracks, high-profile sporting events, and everything in between. However, the reminder to the crowd that another one has bit the dust may be a little crude and distasteful at a funeral. Perhaps Bohemian Rhapsody would be a better fit if you must have some Queen on the playlist.

3. Roll the Bones - Rush - Another classic rock hit, Roll the Bones could easily be a personal fave, but evoking anything to do with images of bones at your funeral would be a terrible idea and would likely cause a lot of disconcert. Stick with Rush songs that don't mention death or bones, such as Bravado or Dreamline, and you should be good to go.

4. Highway to Hell - ACDC - Hard core rock n' roll at its finest, Highway to Hell could easily be considered one of the most famous rock songs of all time, but it has no place at your funeral service--no matter how much of a rocker you are. A funeral is no time to bring up speculation about where you will spend your afterlife. Let There Be Rock and For Those About to Rock are much better choices.
