Selecting A Unique Headstone

Posted on: 18 May 2015

If you have just had a family member pass away, selecting the headstone that will mark the grave site is a personal choice that you will want to ponder in-depth. The headstone you pick is seen by all family and friends and personalizing it is a great way to show your love for your family member. Here are a few ideas to think about when selecting a headstone, giving it meaningful character for all to reflect upon when visiting the gravesite.

Using A Photograph

Consider adding a photograph of your loved one right on their headstone. This is good way for people to remember how they had looked, even years after they pass away. Use a clear photo of your loved one, preferably with a plain background so it does not distract from the image. The picture is placed as a medallion on one of the corners the gravestone. They last for several decades and can withstand all types of weather.

Adding Some Etching

The look of etching on a stone is a magnificent way to display a photo on a headstone in a different way. Add some etched scenery, animals, or something your loved one enjoyed, such a musical scene or a picture of them with a pet. Give the photo to an etching specialist to incorporate across the front of the headstone. Look for something that can be placed on one side or put a few separate etchings on the stone to surround the wording.

Displaying Inscription

The wording that you select to place on a headstone can be more than just the person's name and dates of birth and death. Try adding some of their favorite quotations or some song lyrics that have meaning. These personalized bits of wording will remind people about the type of personality your loved one displayed.

Wording does not need to be placed neatly in a paragraph form. If your loved one was a unique person, putting the wording diagonally or across the sides or top of the stone would be an appropriate gesture to show their whimsical side.

Picking Unique Shapes

Headstones do not need to be shaped in a boring rectangle or oval. Custom made headstones can be cut into any shape you wish. If your loved one enjoyed cars or motorcycles, you can have a stone shaped as one of them. Use a heart-shaped headstone for a couple's plot. Place a stone bench with an inscription on it at the head of the grave so family members have a place to rest while paying respects.
